See Everything with the MINI Z® Handheld Z Backscatter® Screening System
RACOM is very excited about the world’s first handheld Z Backscatter screening system that provides fast, portable, real-time imaging to detect drugs, contraband, and explosives in hard-to-reach locations. They are one of the first public safety channel partners for American Science and Engineering Inc. (AS&E) of Billerica, Massachusetts, the manufacturer of the breakthrough MINI Z system.
On-the-go detection — If you’re not aware, AS&E is the world leader in cargo and vehicle inspection systems with its ZBV®. To develop the MINI Z system, they took the same technology and miniaturized it. The MINI Z system provides effective detection of organic threats, contraband, and explosives for public safety, security officials, customs, and border enforcement.
Goes where others can’t — The MINI Z system is a compact, single-sided imager that can be used to scan objects in suspicious, hard-to-reach areas such as bags, walls, furniture, vehicle tires, car interiors, small boats, and even aircraft. Unlike density meters, trace detectors, or portable transmission X-ray systems, the MINI Z system produces an easy-to-interpret image to quickly locate contraband behind non-metallic surfaces.
Unsurpassed detection of organic threats — Using AS&E’s signature Z Backscatter technology, the MINI Z produces a real-time image of the scan target, highlighting organic materials that transmission X-ray systems can miss, such as drugs, currency, and explosives. Z Backscatter X-ray images highlight low Z-effective materials, which are primarily composed of low atomic number elements (e.g., hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen).

The MINI Z uncovers over $150,000 worth of marijuana while scanning the arm of the excavator. The MINI Z image revealed an anomaly — an area that was sealed to conceal the hidden compartment.
Easy to use — The MINI Z system is self-contained and does not require setup — enabling immediate operation. As an operator scans a target, an image appears in real time on the system’s dedicated tablet. The tablet-based graphical user interface (GUI) provides simple operation and management of the scan data.
Safe operation — The MINI Z system is safe for operators, bystanders, and the environment. The system’s X-ray dose conforms to the appropriate American National Standards Institute (ANSI), International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP), and European Atomic Energy Community (EAEC or EURATOM) radiation safety standards. Although the MINI Z is a low-energy and low-dose Z Backscatter system, it is not designed to scan people. The MINI Z system must be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and under the jurisdiction of local laws and regulations.
Multiple security applications
- Law enforcement — Screening of vehicle bumpers, tires, panels, or interiors for concealed threats such as drugs, currency, cigarettes, explosives, and plastic weapons
- Public safety — Quick screening of unattended or suspicious bags and packages for potential terrorist threats in public spaces
- Event security — Screening of hand baggage and deliveries to ensure public safety
- VIP security — Securing rooms and furniture against organic threats and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to ensure personnel safety
As an AS&E channel partner, RACOM will offer AS&E’s advanced X-ray technology, the ZBV® family of cargo and vehicle screening systems, the Gemini® line of parcel inspection systems, and the SmartCheck® personnel screening system, in addition to the new, breakthrough MINI Z™ handheld screening system.
